Gecekondu – ein Phänomen der türkischen Großstädte seit den 50er Jahren. Von mittellosen Binnenmigranten über Nacht gebaute Behausungen, wachsen schnell zu Vierteln heran, die von ihren Bewohnern selbst organisiert werden, da die Stadtverwaltung dem Zuwachs untätig zusieht. Der Film widmet sich dem Leben in den Gecekondu-Vierteln von Istanbul und zeigt anhand einzelner Viertel und deren Bewohner die verschiedenen Entwicklungsstufen und Möglichkeiten der armen Bevölkerung. Die Weiterentwicklung hängt hier nicht allein von der Duldung bzw. Legalisierung der Stadtverwaltung ab, sondern in hohem Maße von den Strukturen und der Kraft der Gecekondu-Gemeinschaft selbst. Leitfigur ist Fatma Sirin, die mit ihrer Familie als Erstsiedlerin kurdischer Herkunft im Gecekondu-Viertel Yenimahalle ihre ursprünglich notdürftige Unterkunft zu einem dreistöckigen Haus ausgebaut hat. Der Film zeigt die Menschen im Spannungsfeld von Legalität und Illegalität mit ihren Konflikten und Widersprüchen, und gibt ihnen Raum, selbst zu erzählen.
Gecekondu has been a phenomenon in Istanbul since the 1950s: migrants from all parts of the country arrive and build shelters over night from the simplest materials. Based on tradtional conventions and due to loopholes in legisation once a dwelling with four walls and a roof is built on state property it can not be destroyed. But in this process, time is of the essence, which is why gecekondus are built and moved into in the course of just one night. These initial dwellings quickly developed into entire neighborhoods. While many of them have long existed somewhere between state tolerance and illegality, their fragility is sadly apparent in the recurring waves of gecekondu destructions through the city administration. The film tells the stories of diverse inhabitants of different Gecekondu settlements and portrays the struggles as well as the possibilities that these populations are faced with. More often than not, their fate is not just dependent on state tolerance or persecution, but also on how they can organize as a community. The protagonist of the Film is the Kurdish Fatma Sirin, who was one of the first settlers of the gecekondu dwellings of Yenimahalle. She tells the story of how through all the contradictions and conflcits of gecekondu life, she and her family managed to transform the makeshift room that once was their house into a three-story apartment building.
